Mock Interview: Customer Success Engineer
I recently chatted with my college friends who are going through interviews for deployed engineer positions. As I looked through their interview prep, I realized that it’s eerily similar to my role as a Customer Success Engineer at IBM. Client-facing engineer bringing strong technical chops and interpersonal story-telling. Sprinkle in a little bit of enterprise knowledge (familiarity with a particular industry would be a huge plus here). Now, this role may take on different names. At IBM, we are called Customer Success Engineers. Some companies call us Customer Success Managers, Product Managers, Solution Architects, Sales Engineers, or Technical Sales Engineers. The names are not important, the job description is: they can navigate the “latent space” between raw model and a production-grade application. That got me thinking, how would I answer those mock interview questions?
I am going to use IBM/LangChain/Anthropic as examples here. After all, these are the companies leading the charge in helping enterprises adopt AI.
0. Introduction: Who AM I?
I am working in IBM as Data & AI customer success engineers dedicated to clients in financial services markets. I started at IBM 3 years ago as an AI engineer in the client engineering team. If you remember that’s right about the time everyone is crazed about LLMs (looking at you ChatGPT). As part of the client engineering team we do rapid Proof-of-Concepts, which at the time focused a lot on RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generations). We use watsonx.ai as the model platform, llama and granite models, and ElasticSearch as the vector database, and
1. Why are you interested in LangChain, our deployed team and your understanding of our offering at a high level
The Angle: Deployed Engineering sits at the intersection of technology and business.
Enterprise Angle: Working with the financial service clients in the last few years, I have seen firsthand the emphasis on governance. Governance is important for reliability and for compliance to regulations (such as GDPR or BCBS 239 for banks). I saw that many software purchase decisions are swayed due to the ability to show to auditors, here’s how my applications will behave. That’s true for deterministic software programs, it is even more true for non-deterministic models. So how do we build guardrails around this non-deterministic model is what I think is the future of enterprise AI. So that’s why I’m intrigued with LangChain and its ecosystem supporting AI in an enterprise setting. For LangGraph for state management for agents to LangSmith for observability, This allows for explicit state management and “Human-in-the-loop” approval nodes, which are non-negotiable for financial auditors who need to verify a query before it executes against a production database. I see this ecosystem as the evolution from “playing with prompts” to actual application deployment.
Personal Angle: I want to join the Deployed Team because I enjoy the high-stakes environment of taking these frameworks and making them work within the client requirements. In my work at IBM, I have experience taking clients through different use cases and different technologies. I enjoy solving this technology puzzle.
2. Your unique POV around how you view our LangChain offerings in the market and what we could offer potential customers
The Angle:The shift from RAG to “Agentic Workflows.”
The Answer: My POV is that the market is moving very fast. Just seems like yesterday that my customers are asking for demos on RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation), and now we want agent orchestration for thinking, and reasoning capabilities. One thing that’s consistent though is that POCs and actual production deployment are vastly different. While demos can be impressive, actually pushing AI or LLMs usecase in production requires consistent reliability. And that’s where LangChain’s impressive stack come in. LangChain/LangGraph allow you to write the agent pipeline, and LangSmith gives you the tool to debug, evaluate and ship reliable agents. The ability to trace and debug why an agent made a decision is what I think the secret weapon is in enterprise.
Architecture Grounding: My experience with watsonx.governance focused on monitoring feature and output drift. Before LLMs, we need to have tools to evaluate ML models and make sure that it performs reliability.
3. Your start-up experience or desire to work within startup motions
The Angle: The “Intrapreneur” at IBM.
The Answer: My role in Client Engineering functioned like a startup within a giant. We build demos and POCs measured in days and weeks. Sometimes we jump in with the client before the client themselves know what they really want. But we are learning together, iterate fast, and ultimately co-create a solution that addresses a business use case.
4. Times you’ve helped move a technical idea or proof of concept forward, especially in partnership with customers or stakeholders
The Angle: We need more than technical excellence in driving software purchasing decisions.
The Enterprise Angle: The POCs and demos I drive, the more I learned that enterprise software purchasing decisions require more than technical capabilities. We can show technical stakeholders technical benefits: how much time does it save, how it benefits your developers/data engineers, how it addresses your data pie line. Now we need to show the business stakeholders, how we are saving them money or increasing revenue - how do we convince the client stakeholders that they need to allocate budget for this?
If they are already looking for a solution, and that we have competing solutions, then we need to perform competitive analysis, from granular capabilities to long term roadmap to pricing. But if they are on the fence about the solution, or if they want to build it in-house, then we need to sell the business value and perform a BVA. “This solution saves your developers time addressing low-level data quality issues, freeing them up for higher-priority issues, translating to this $$ of savings”
My Example: Led collaboration with client team’s architects and engineers to map end-to-end legacy data pipeline, implementing LLM enabled-metadata enrichment (with Granite models), and automated data quality remediation workflows. These efforts delivered a gen-ai ready data foundation with a projected $6M annual savings ($1.2M direct labor savings, $1M on data error reduction, and $2.4M on data quality improvements). By first showing the technical capability, and then following up with client’s estimates, I transformed a technical experiment into an actionable initiative for the client’s architects.
5. Experience designing or contributing to agent-based or LLM-powered application (e.g. multi-step workflows, orchestration, handling failure cases)
The Angle: ReAct and Orchestration.
The Answer: I’ve built multi-step workflows that go beyond simple chat. I developed a Gen-AI workflow integrating Microsoft Teams, Service Now and Workday APIs to automate applicant onboarding. This required multi-shot prompting and complex orchestration to ensure that data extracted from one API was correctly formatted for the next step in the sequence.”
Architecture Grounding: I used watsonx Orchestrate to reduce manual processing time by 60%. That specific demo didn’t call for it, but for more complex failure handling, I would implement recursive task decomposition. If an agent fails to extract a specific field from an API, rather than failing the whole run, the architecture should spawn a sub-agent to ‘retry’ with a different extraction strategy or a broader context window.
6. Situations where you worked directly with customers pre-sale AND post-sale
The Enterprise Angle: In my three years in IBM I have been dedicated to Financial Service clients, which are ELA (Enterprise Level Agreement) driven.
The Answer: I have experience working with large financial service companies. With software purchasing decisions baked into ELA cycles, I alternate between pre-sale and post-sale by nature. Leading up to the ELA agreement, I work with our account executives to identify business challenges, business use cases, and perform demos/pilots to demonstrate the value of the solution. In an off-year, I work with our client engineering teams to deploy and use the softwares in their environment. In post-sale, I have to drill into the granular of the business use case, as I would be talking to one specific department, for example HR, and showcasing our values.
7. How you explain technical tradeoffs and build trust with developer or engineering audiences
The Angle: Honest technical reality
The Answer: It’s important to be honest about what is available now. We can share the roadmap if the customer wants a capability that’s not current available, but overselling, under-delivering is the fastest way to kill a relationship. I build trust by being honest about tradeoffs.
A recent example of me explaining the technical tradeoffs would be my experiment building an agent using three different frameworks: LangChain/LangGraph, watsonx.orchestrate, and CrewAI. With the same MCP tool (same set of tools), I also gave the framework similar system prompts. I called out LangChain’s strength in explicit control flow, built-in human-in-the-loop, and my personal favorite time-traveling (debugging). I also called out watsonx.orchestrate’s capability in enterprise deployments (low-code, no-code).
Lastly, I build trust with the developer community with my online presence, whether that is through my personal websites, my medium blog accounts, and my YouTube Channel discussing Data & AI. As I stay curious and keep current with the innovations industry, I share back the knowledge with my peers. Most recently, I shared my understanding of context engineering, or how using business metadata injecting context at inference time decreases token bloat and improves model accuracy. This is something I will continue to do anywhere, maintaining my technical edge and continuing improving my ability in explaining technical concepts in a clear way.
Another ExampleI implemented PEFT/LoRA to inject IBM Risk Atlas expertise into open-source models. Prioritizing smaller Language Model, instead of forcing a massive 70B model to handle simple routing tasks, I’d use a smaller, distilled model to handle intent classification, drastically reducing the Cost-per-Token and improving user-perceived latency.
8. Examples where you owned outcomes end to end or experience operating software or AI systems in production
The Angle: Responding to major RFP to the product, in collaboration with product management and account executives
The Answer: Last year, we received a RFP (request for proposal) from a major financial services enterprise. They want to gain visibility into their data pipelines, from source data systems, across ETL tools, scripts, to downstream applications. I led IBM’s response to the RFP, addressing criteria including product capability (can the product trace lineage through specific types of database), application integration and inter-operability (what are other tools in the customer’s environments), deployment options (as SaaS or self-managed on-premise software), and long term possibilities. Also led five custom demos as part of this RFP.
I coordinated with my account executive and my seller to manage our relationships with the client, as this is cross-unit effort across Consumer Lending, Finance, and Commercial Banking with over 20 stakeholders. We presented our demos to data engineers, mainframe architects.
I also worked very closely with our product management to give our clients the best option, including product roadmap, deployment options.
